Online Influencers Diversify Their Offerings

You’re out over your skis, you’re biting off more than you can chew, stay in your lane. These are common, dismissive retorts we’ve all heard at one time or another, especially when trying to push the envelope or shake things up. Though such words can be hurtful in the moment, they reflect a real truth, namely that we each have a certain sphere of competence wherein we perform at our best and do our best work, a sphere that it’s often not a good idea to venture too far out from.

But how does one determine what that sphere is? Sure, a janitor performing brain surgery is almost certainly stepping out of line, but what about a lawyer taking on the duties of a CFO, or a painter taking up animation? And what about this roughly decade old profession we call online influencers? What realms should this glut of newly minted entrepreneurs/celebrities/artists/CEOs/marketers occupy? One influencer turned game designer, Alexander Bennett, or as his fans know him as, CMeeCraft, has quite the bold answer.

“Anything, and everything. If I can deliver a satisfying product to my viewers or customers, why not give it a go? Pragmatically, I stick mostly to my passions and things I have actual talent in, but if tomorrow I want to go out there and start making, say archery content, why not? I’m my own boss, so if there’s an opportunity along those lines, I’m going to make it happen, no. ifs, ands, or buts __.”
Others have argued for more caution, as an expertise in SEO and entertaining kids on the internet isn’t correlated at all with the skills needed to safely run other, businesses like food preparation and distribution. Besides, do we really want those personalities addicting our kids on social media seeping out into the real world?
