School Board Food Fight!

Most people associate school board meetings with the type of plodding boredom you’d find at the DMV. Well, last Thursday, at the bi-weekly Jacobs County school board meeting such a characterization couldn’t be further from the truth.

The first three hours of the meeting were typical, dull fare, discussions about the logistics of test proctoring, proposed changes to the schools’ dress code, things like that. Then the details of the school lunch program came up and all hell broke loose.

Board Member Felicia Polk, who had run for her seat on a platform of improving the health of school lunches, stood up and claimed the floor for over half an hour, citing the benefits of her proposed reforms to the program. She had a PowerPoint, presentation, physical charts, and even fresh produce to use as props. Her enthusiasm certainly showed, but so did the annoyance of her fellow board members, especially Chairman Colt. When Miss Polk refused to give up the floor for him to speak, he threw one of the tomatoes she’d brought, square in her chest. Though he seemed immediately regretful, it was too late. Food was flying and no one was getting out of that meeting unscathed.
We reached out to Mr. Colt and Miss Polk for comment, but neither of them have at time of writing returned our calls.
